Hearts firm on Ian Cathro option

Football News – Tynecastle sources are hopeful a compensation deal with Newcastle United will be thrashed out in the next 24 hours.

The Jambos have made an official approach and want Cathro, right, in place for the weekend clash with Rangers.

If it all goes to plan then it is likely Cathro will watch from the stands with Andy Kirk and Jon Daly left to take the team just as they did in the 2-2 draw against Ross County in Dingwall at the weekend.

United boss Rafa Benitez has already given Cathro the green light to take a head coach job. The capital club made the former Valencia and Rio Ave assistant their top target to replace Robbie Neilson, who left for MK Dons last week.

Cathro worked as a youth coach under Hearts director of football Craig Levein at Dundee United before he headed abroad to continue his development.

The 30-year-old returned to British football as a coach at Newcastle under Steve McClaren and has continued in that role with Benitez.

One of Cathro’s first moves will be to appoint Austin MacPhee as his assistant.

MacPhee – who was on the SFA’s shortlist to become the next performance director – is currently one of Michael O’Neill’s coaching staff in the Northern Ireland set-up.
