F1 News – New Formula 1 chairman Chase Carey made his Formula 1 Strategy Group meeting debut when it convened in Geneva on Wednesday.

The meeting, which featured representatives from Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari, Williams, McLaren, Force India and the FIA along with F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone and Carey, is believed to have been a constructive.

The idea of simplifying F1’s regulations and long-term strategic thinking was high on the agenda.

Several paddock figures have voiced their concern in recent weeks that F1 is over-regulated in the wake of penalties for driving offences.

No firm decisions were made in Geneva, but it is understood there was general agreement that the rules need to be made clearer.

It is expected that work on this will be carried out over the winter, with a desire to give appropriate time for thorough discussion before implementation.

This move comes after criticism from both fans and those within the paddock that changes to the rules in recent times, such as a tweak to the qualifying format earlier this year, have been rash.

Autosport understands a proposal to introduce a permanent steward was tabled by one team principal, following complaints that there is not enough consistency in decisions.

The topic of penalties was discussed, and there was a suggestion from one attendee that too much power lies with FIA F1 race director Whiting and that there should be a reworking of the procedure on how penalties are determined.

The topic is expected to be discussed further when the group next meets.
