Esteban Gutiérrez admits being at Haas’ mercy
F1 News – Esteban Gutiérrez says his future is in Haas’ hands as he bids to remain on the Formula 1 grid into 2017.
Gutiérrez returned to Formula 1 with new entrant Haas this year but has failed to score a point and the outfit is understood to be close to a deal with Kevin Magnussen.
With Romain Grosjean set to stay on, and Renault and Force India having finalised its 2017 line-ups this week, it would leave Gutiérrez with only Manor and Sauber as alternatives if he is to stay in the sport.
“I think it’s very clear that the decision will be made very soon,” said Gutiérrez.
“My future is in the team’s hands so at the moment there’s a lot of talks up and down, but it’s the way it is, they’ve taken a bit long to take the decision.
“We are in November, with only two races to go, so it’s definitely a bit late to take the decision, but it’s their team, and it’s not really on my hands.
“I have been doing my best all through the year no matter what the circumstances were.”
Gutiérrez was nonetheless receptive to the concept of a return to Sauber, with whom he raced in 2013 and 2014, during his first full-time stint in the sport.
“That’s something that we have to think about, when the decision is made,” he added.
“I’m not sure exactly what the situation is there [at Sauber], but right now the decision is not taken here yet, so I have to push until the end, and then we will see.”
