Football News – A positive outcome would be grade-one damage and only a 10-day lay-off but the nightmare scenario grade-three verdict might sideline him until 2017.

Spurs fear Harry Kane is out for up to two months with ankle ligament damage.

That would rule the striker out of Tottenham’s clashes with title favourites Manchester City, champions Leicester and bitter rivals Arsenal, as well as three of their remaining five Champions League group matches.

Spurs will receive the results on Tuesday of a second scan on their 23-year-old England international’s damaged right ankle.

An initial scan has already ruled out a fracture but there are fears he has suffered grade-two ligament damage, which would sideline him for between six and eight weeks.

He would also be out of three World Cup qualifiers – against Malta and Slovenia, plus the Wembley showdown with Scotland on November 11.

A positive outcome for Spurs would be grade-one damage, resulting in only a 10-day lay-off.

The nightmare scenario is a grade-three injury, ruling the player out for four months.

Kane, who scored the winner against Sunderland on Sunday, was injured in a late challenge on defender Papy Djilobodji.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is readying £17million striker Vincent Janssen to step into the breach if needed.

Pochettino, whose side host third-tier Gillingham in the League Cup on Wednesday, could also use in-form attacking midfielder Son Heung-min in the centre-forward position if needed.

But Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris has backed Janssen, who netted 30 goals for Alkmaar and Holland last season, to deliver if Tottenham’s worst fears are confirmed.

Lloris said: “We used to say that we have a competitive team and I think we are very confident in every player. When one player is missing, it gives an opportunity to another player to bring his skills, his energy, his qualities and his strength.

“This is the story of the season and that’s why we need all the players committed to the club. When the team needs you, you need to respond.”
