Joe Hart reveals how Gareth Southgate helped him ace against Slovenia
Football News – JOE HART has been told by Gareth Southgate to keep calm and carry on saving – a change of attitude which he believes helped him produce a man-of-the-match display against Slovenia.
The Torino goalkeeper, on loan from Manchester City, injured his shoulder making a vital save just after the break to ensure England at least took one point from their trip to Ljubljana.
Scans back in Italy are expected to reveal the extent of the damage, although the fact Hart was able to complete the game suggest there should be no long-term repercussions.
However, it is Hart’s mental state that has been subject of particular focus in recent months, after a string of gaffes during Euro 2016 followed infamous histrionic rants in the tunnels of the various grounds in France, all captured on camera.
One of those who witnessed the incidents was interim manager Southgate, and as a result he took Hart into a quiet corner of St George’s Park last week to explain to him he needed to rein in his emotions if he is to be at his most useful for his country.
“We had a long conversation,” Southgate said. “I couldn’t have been happier with his performance over the 10 days. His approach to training and calmness in both matches, and his performance, were top class.
“He’s talked himself about how he approaches things. I can only talk of my work with him and we saw against Malta what an outstanding goalkeeper he can be.”
Hart, whose position with England was put under threat when Pep Guardiola made it clear he is not part of his Manchester City plans, is enjoying the freedom to keep things simple again after admitting to a miserable summer.
“The summer was difficult,” he said. “I am gutted about how the summer went but it has gone now. Football moves quickly. You have got to move on and you have got to keep fighting.
“I will continue to keep fighting for my country. I cherish every moment I play and long may that continue.
“I don’t know if I was too hyped up. Certainly, I would have loved to have saved the two shots that I should have saved [in France] but they are gone. I am going to try and rectify that by being in a good place.
“As a goalkeeper, you can’t chase situations. On Saturday against Malta, I didn’t have anything to do. Against Slovenia, I did. You have got to let the ball come to you as a keeper. I am trying to grow and I am trying to improve every single day.
“I just love diving around in goal. Being able to do it for my country is amazing and I remind myself of it every single time I pull on an England shirt.
“Sometimes you will take a whack for it but I will do anything to keep the ball out of the net. They hurt but we get up and get on with it.”
